If you’re applying to university for 2027, the landscape looks very different from even two years ago. Policies are changing fast and the “obvious” destinations are no longer obvious.
The US: still world-class, but slower to reach
American universities remain a top choice for many UAE students but getting there is taking longer. Recent reports show that the US State Department lost about a third of its consular officers handling student and visitor visas between 2024 and 2025. Average visa interview waits have reportedly reached around 200 days. This autumn, some international students arrived on campus weeks after term had started.
What this means for you: if the US is on your list, apply early and book your visa appointment the moment you have your I-20. Have a back-up plan ready.
Canada: fewer international places
After Canada introduced caps on study permits, international student numbers there have fallen sharply. Domestic enrolment is now rebounding. Competition for the remaining international places is tougher, and planning ahead matters more than ever.
The UK: demand is rising
Meanwhile, interest in the UK keeps growing. At last year’s 15 October deadline for Oxford, Cambridge, medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses, UCAS recorded 24,350 international applicants, up 11.5% on the year before. This year’s 15 October deadline is days away, so if you’re applying for these courses, now is the time to finish your statement and check your reference.
The bigger picture: best fit beats big name
More families are asking a sensible question: What return will this degree give us? Living costs, course structure, graduate employment, visa routes after graduation and the student experience all matter as much as a famous name. Often the strongest choice is a university that suits you perfectly, wherever it is.
Our advice for 2027 applicants:
- Spread your options across at least two countries.
- Start early. Visa timelines and deadlines are less forgiving than they used to be.
- Compare outcomes, not just rankings: graduate jobs, salaries and post-study work rights.
- Choose fit: the course, campus and city where you will thrive.
